At Ecoceramic, we are proud to announce that we have reached a key milestone in our commitment to sustainability: we have obtained ISO 17889-1 certification, “Sustainability issues for ceramic tiling systems,” an international standard that assesses the sustainability of ceramic products throughout their entire life cycle.
This standard examines everything from raw material extraction to the product’s final disposal, including employee health and safety, and is aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 for responsible consumption and production. ISO 17889-1 evaluates the sustainability of ceramic tiles using 38 indicators covering environmental, social, and economic impacts, and sets out 15 mandatory and 24 voluntary requirements. To achieve certification, products must meet a minimum score on the voluntary requirements, ensuring they comply with the highest sustainability standards.
ISO 17889-1:2021 evaluates sustainability across three main dimensions:
Environmental: efficiency in the use of resources and energy, waste management, use of locally sourced raw materials, employment of recycled packaging, and a robust environmental management system.
Economic: product quality, performance, and suitability to market needs.
Social: protection of workers’ health and safety, as well as respect for labor and human rights throughout the supply chain.
For Ecoceramic, this certification is a recognition of our commitment to sustainability and a driver to continue improving our practices, optimizing resources, and ensuring the highest quality ceramics. It is an achievement that allows customers and designers to identify truly sustainable products, while reaffirming our commitment to both the planet and people.
